“Local Hero” – 9-15 May in Dortmund

From 9 to 15 May 2010, Dortmund is the “Local Hero” of the Ruhr. The “Local Hero” project gives 52 towns in the Ruhr the chance to attract international attention as the central focus of the European Capital of Culture for one week in 2010.

"Local Hero” Dortmund has lots on offer:

  • a first view inside the Dortmund U
  • the start of the festival "scene: hungary in nrw 2010" including the opening of the Media Art Exhibition “Agents & Agitators" of the Hartware MedienKunstVerein on 14 May in the Dortmund U,
  • the Music Festival SOUNDVOCAL
    including concerts by jazz stars China Moses and Stacey Kent and J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor directed by Sir John Eliot Gardiner,
  • the start of the Parkfestival "transindustriale" with an installation by Thomas Baumgärtel,
  • the 8th German Choir Competition
  • the Children and Young People’s Theatre Week NRW - "Westwind"
    with the finest regional productions from one theatre season,
  • the project LightArtSpace St.Reinoldi
    with light-art installations by the internationally renowned artists Angela Bulloch, Andreas Oldörp and Jun Yang,
  • with an ecumenical Opening Service of the Protestant and Catholic Church in Dortmund on 9 May at 11.30 am in the Reinoldi Church. The focal point of the service will be the Capital of Culture Cross, which is travelling through all 53 towns of the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
  • "Pure Parkour",
    the 1st Dortmund Parkour Convention
  • the premiere of the hip hop play "(TRIPTIQUE)", dance theatre involving young people from Dortmund,
  • the film series "Women’s Views of the Ruhr", which will present films by and about women in the Cinestar on 10 and 11 May 2010. “Women’s Views of the Ruhr” will also be the title of an exhibition by the group "duktus – artists in the Ruhr territory" which will be in the Cinestar Cinema from 7 May.
  • a free workshop by the Dortmund Schauspiel Theatre (DE): on 9 May 2010 theatre fans between 15 and 25 years of age are invited to get to grips with Bertolt Brechts “Baal”. Afterwards the workshop will visit a current production of “Baal”, staged by young amateurs alongside theatre professionals. Theatre projects with young amateurs have been a successful part of the work of the Schauspiel Theatre for 11 years.
  • a reading by the P.E.N. author Franziska Sperr on 10 May, the anniversary of the 1933 book burnings. On this day 53 P.E.N. authors will read in 53 towns of the Ruhr Metropolis. Franziska Sperr will present her novel “The Blackbird’s Territory” which was published in 2008: 7.30 pm in Studio B of the City and Regional Library
  • two "experience tours" in the Hoesch Museum (DE): The “3D Steelworks Experience” will recreate the atmosphere of a real steel works for its participants. This interactive tour for children, young people and adults is on 9 May 2010 at 11.00 am and on 10 May 2010 at 6.00 pm. Entrance free!
