International Project Partnerships

The City of Dortmund has signed the resolution of the Association of German Cities "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Shaping sustainability at local level" and thus commits to the local implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Considering these 17 SDGs and their numerous targets, cities play a central role in localizing these goals. Especially SDG 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities" refers to the challenges that cities worldwide are facing. SDG 17 calls for a strengthening of global partnerships and enhanced international solidarity. Local authorities are called upon to stand together and support each other in the implementation of the SDGs.

The minister-presidents of the German federal states have declared in various conferences to support independent foreign development activities of municipalities and to promote their commitment.

The City of Dortmund is increasingly involved in municipal development policy and project-based, international municipal cooperation. Activities related to international project partnerships are coordinated by the Office for International Relations and Sustainable Development, mainly in cooperation with the Environment Agency, the Economic Development Agency, the Department 2 for finance, municipal properties and culture and Department 5 for labor, health, social affairs, sports and leisure, the Chief Information/ Innovation Office (CIO) and the municipal subsidiaries.

The aim of international project partnerships is to cooperate as equals, profit from each other’s knowledge and experience and promote the implementation of the SDGs in both countries or regions. The cooperating municipalities identify issues relevant for both partners and support each other in finding sustainable solutions.
