17 goals for a sustainable future

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Agenda 2030 – a global framework for sustainable development and the reduction of poverty. At its core are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
All 17 goals and their 169 targets call to action to jointly take care of common concerns and public goods, e.g. climate, biodiversity, water and soil. Making the world trade system fairer, establishing social justice or securing peace are described as tasks for all. The joint responsibility of North and South for more justice in the One World is emphasized.

Local authorities are of particular importance for the implementation of the goals formulated in the Agenda 2030. According to the UN, almost 70% of the world‘s population will live in cities by 2050. That is why local authorities are at the forefront of the fight against poverty and global environmental challenges.

By signing the resolution on the implementation of the Agenda 2030 by the Association of German Cities, Dortmund has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to a wide range of sustainability issues. Participation in the project "Global Sustainable Municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia" also contributes to the implementation of the global sustainability goals at municipal level.

Since the establishment of the former Agenda Office in March 1999, the many actors involved in implementing the SDGs in Dortmund have been supported and brought together by the city administration – among others through the Action Alliance for Fair Trade and the working groups Education & School (Education for Sustainable Development) and Sustainable Mobility.
