City partnership with Trabzon
On 02.06.2014 the partnership between Trabzon and Dortmund was sealed. Mayor Sierau and Mayor Dr. Orhan Fevzi Gümrükcüoglu signed the partnership document.

Dortmund has a multicultural urban society, where people from different backgrounds are living, working and participating in the city life together. The largest group among them are the people with a Turkish migrant background. 23.2% (40,985 people) of all 176,778 immigrants in Dortmund are Turkish. Their immigration reality and role is reflected most clearly in all levels of society. With this background, existing since 2010 project partnerships between Dortmund and Trabzon, which are now converted into an official city partnership.

The former "Foreign Residents Committee", which is today the "Integration Council", had already in 2008 supported the project partnership. Moreover in the aftermath insert extensively for the establishment of an official city partnership - the participation of numerous actors within and outside of politics and administration.

Accordingly for years there are intensive contacts to Trabzon, in particular cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, sports, youth, educational and scientific terms.
Examples include, the ERASMUS exchange program of both technical universities, various experts meetings on youth and social work as well as the organization of an exhibition as part of the Turkish Culture Festival "Merhaba home!". The exchange of trainees and implementation of internships between the municipalities and subsidiaries as well as the initiation of school partnerships is to be initiated in the near future.
Dortmund and Trabzon have similarities
Positive for the future development of the partnership is to assess that already solid work and communication structures, but also collegial networks have formed working together with confidence. This also applies to organizations and institutions outside the administration.
In addition, both cities have important similarities: Trabzon offers as well as Dortmund a port, an airport and an internationally recognized University of Technology. Both cities share their passion for football: Dortmund has the "BVB" and in Trabzon the also internationally renowned club "Trabzonspor". These and other similarities provide optimal future possibilities for interesting partnership projects.
